Profile The Identity of Washi：What is washi？It is written in the old document "Nihonshoki" that paper was introduced in Japan in A.D. 610 by the Chinese Buddhist monk Donchou． Then, for 1300 years, the materials and processes in its production were improved creating the paper unique to Japan． Today, due to its incomparable strength and beauty, Japan's paper, washi, is valued highly in the world. Generations have passed and washi has become scarce, of high value, and difficult to obtain. In the midst of this, we, successors of washi-making, consider it our duty and mission to resurrect its tradition and find its rightful place in the daily living and culture of the present time. In today’s paper industry, a variety of materials have emerged, methods have been developed, and technology has greatly advanced. Alongside, paper products have also diversified, and, presently, the demand for the development of those that are highly functional or those with exceptionally eloquent designs exist. We believe that exploring and digging out potential needs for washi is the very way to opening the door to its future. To fulfill this, utilizing washi’s identity as the core, we will have to promote creation and development towards a wider field.
